WE ARE LIKING THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Today we met our next door neighbors.

We have been waving hi throughout the week and today we went over to say, “Hola” and ended up visiting for a couple hours.  They showed us their garden, full of mango, pomegranate, lime, papaya trees.  By the way, the pomegranate tree is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen.  We definitely would like to put one in our yard.  It produces fruit year round and has a pretty soft green foliage.

I am so excited to say that our Spanish was “flowing” pretty smooth.  And, they helped us out a little where we stumbled.

This couple filled us in on some fantastic important information.  For instance, we know there must be better local tiendas to buy produce from instead of the very expensive Walmart.  Senora showed what she just brought home from a little place in town.  These fruits and vegetables looked like something from the Garden of Eden.  A cauliflower the size of a basketball.  Plum tomatoes the size of softballs.  And such rich, lush colors and scents from her oranges, peppers, and lettuce.  All for just a fraction of the cost in the States.  (and half the price from the local Walmart)  We can’t wait to get into town and turn right down the little side street (Colon Calle) to just off the town square.

Also, we learned that the 2 large water distributors are owned by Coke and by Pepsi.  Not sure which is owned by Coke and which by Pepsi.  A large jug (5 gal size) that gets delivered to your home costs just over $1.

There are many many restaurants in Ajijic.  In one little quarter mile strip just outside of town there are at least a dozen restaurants right on the lake.  People from Guadalajara come here for the weekend to enjoy sitting lakeside, eating the fresh seafood, while listening to live music.

Our neighbor told us her favorite restaurant in town is Tony’s -right next to Super Lake grocery store.  (if you are looking for something non-Mexican, Super Lake is the grocery store for you)  Tony’s is famous for their arrechera.  (hope I came close on the spelling)  This is a marinated steak that melts in your mouth.  Mmmm…

Our family “date” was to go there for dinner.  Mikee had the arrechera, Cami had tortilla soup, Austin had ribs (and he couldn’t even finish because he was so full which hardly ever happens now that he is an eating machine), India has some steak fajitas with fresh guacamole, and Ginger Kitty sneaked a little from everyone.  And we even took home leftovers -so there is food in the house!  It is common for restaurants to have musicians playing and singing while you eat.  Very enjoyable.

Gracias los vecinos.  Hasta luego.

The tiendas are wonderful for buying produce (and other things) but there is also a “farmer’s market” in the plaza at Chapala (or was when we were there). The produce was better than you can find in the stores around here. Just be sure to soak the produce first. Also be sure to go to Mazamitla (sp?) on the south side of the lake for lunch. Much different from the north side of the lake. Lots of pine trees.

Hi there immigrants! I live in Napa, CA and married an old [since 1978] family friend 2 months ago who is Mexican. We are retiring next year and moving to Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico. I’m so excited to be doing so that I can’t even tell you! Anyways, I found your site through GoMexico.com and love it. Thanks for all the time and work put into the blog. I’m trying to learn from what you’re going through. Douglas Siner

Thanks for the comments. We have enjoyed writing about our experiences here. And we never seem to run out of material -just time. 😉 We are excited for you as you prepare to move to Mexico. It has truly been a wonderful experience for our family to be living in this country. And, hey, who knows… maybe our paths will cross sometime.
