“Pour me some, will ya?” (by Austin)

Some of you are probably thinking, what is there to drink in Mexico? Well, we don’t drink as much down here as the States. In fact, we … Wait a minute.

Sorry, I was thirsty. Where was I, oh yes! In fact, I have a chart of what we drink.

MEXICO                                                 U.S.A

water…66%                                           water….13%

milk….10%                                             milk…..04%

juice….22%                                             juice….53%

soda….02% soda…..30%

(this is not an actual scientific chart) 🙂

HUGE difference!

Down here you can get all sorts of sodas! Grapefruit, lime, orange, vanilla, strawberry, apple, etc. We don’t drink water from the tap, so we drink less of it.  (not really)  Juice is cheap AND cheap, so we drink it the most. We never had soda back in the States, so it’s great to have soda now. We L.O.V.E.D the varieties of soda when we came this summer, so we were excited to have a lot now. My favorite soda is  a grapefruit soda called Fresca.

India’s favorite is an apple soda called Lift.

And Kitty loves any soda that’s in arm reach.

It’s easy to ask for because soda is the same word in Spanish –soda.  (I like those easy words)

Right on the side of the road you can buy juice in a BAG. It’s fresh made right before your eyes. There’s even a green juice that’s a mixture of fresh oranges, strawberries and CACTUS! My favorite juice I have had so far is pineapple. (pina) In second place is coconut milk which I had at the tienguis which is an outside market.  This guy cut open a real coconut, stabbed with a machete kind of knife and poured the coconut milk into a bag, tied it in a knot, popped in a straw.  It was delicioso.  There is also peach, strawberry, mango, papaya, pomegranate …and so much I can’t even name them all.

Coconut milk in a bag

We know you’re thinking this, but no, we don’t have chili pepper soda. 😀

Adios, Austin

p.s My mom still makes us drink a lot of water.

WITH ALL THAT SODA, YOU CAN’T FORGET TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH. WHERE DO YOU GET THE WATER TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH (TAP OR BOTTLE)?

Hi Grampa! We have to use bottled water! We put toothpaste on, brush, and then pour bottled water on the toothbrush to rinse it off. We’re still getting used to brushing our teeth like that!

Austin, you don’t know me, I’m friends with your parents from before they had kiddos. Reconnected on the internet. anywhoooo? We spent 4 months in Mexico many years ago. At the branch, everyday, they would serve fruit water. they would puree fresh fruit and add water. We had watermelon, papaya, cantelope, pretty much any fruit. You may want to try that as a refreshing alternative to all your other options. I know soda is really cheap there. So is beer, its another safe alternative. ; ) The ice in drinks, got us a couple of times. you just forget…

      Stephanie,
I haven’t met you but my parents say you’re really cool, so I hope to meet you sometime. I’d like to try the water ideas, they sound delicious! I’d also like to try the beer idea, but my parents won’t let me. 😀 Thanks for the comment!

ALL THAT SODA. Looks good to me. I want to know what juice was in the bag that it was clear like that. It looks really cool to have it freshly squeezed UmMM.

Hi Becca! How are you? That juice I was drinking was coconut milk! Is the hall falling apart without us, or are you holding it together? 😉 Enjoy your snow!

Hi Austin! I’m with you. Soda is good! Especially fruit sodas. We have a Portuguese one here that is real orange juice with carbonated water in it, they concentrate the orange juice so it doesn’t lack flavor when they add the carbonated water. It’s very good but much more expensive than the regular mass produced kinds of soda.

I’ll drink as much as my mom will let me get away with. 😉
