DRY SEASON

These past couple months have been the dry season here on Lake Chapala.  And, they are truly d-r-r-r-y.  (excuse me while I get something to drink)  There has been no rain since around last September.  (except for the crazy freak storm we were in the middle of a bit ago where the restaurant sign crashed)

A couple posts ago you might remember pictures of us on the roof trying to fix our water situation.  In the craziness of the set up, a certain man opened a certain valve that sprayed gallons (or liters) of water straight up like a geyser.  This much water made a small lake (or large puddle -whatever you like to call it) on our roof but we were not too concerned once we started watching it evaporate before our eyes.  Seriously, that is how hot and dry it was.  This large amount of water evaporated right in front of us!  Within minutes it was mostly gone!

People who live here and know the seasons commented a couple months ago on the dryness and how brown the mountains are.  Little did we realize then that it would continue to get dryer and dryer and hotter and hotter.

We took these pictures of the mountains across the lake in April.  It was so clear that you could see the mountain top of the volcano in Colima which is about a 3 hour drive from here.

Since then the landscape has very visibly shown the lack of water.   On the other side of those mountains is a dry lake bed.  The dust from that lake gets picked up and travels over the mountains and across the lake and passes us as it travels up the side of the mountains where we live.

You can barely make out the mountains on the other side

Those are dust clouds -not rain

Here comes a storm of dust across the lake

This happens each evening

The daytime temps have been in the high 80s and often the 90s.  It was our practice to sit outside for a bit in the evenings when things cool off.  But with how dry and dusty it is we have kinds of been skipping that part of our daily routine.

We still have beautiful flowers blooming but the explosion will be even more vibrant once the rains come.  (this is still better than the gray days of winter that last 8 months back home)

The funny thing about seasons is they gives glimpses of time frame but you still can’t know exactly when the anticipated rains will begin.  There are a lot of things in life like that.  So we keep paying attention.

Hi Guys! Ok, so the dryness is something I do NOT miss! This is the worst time of the year there – but hang in there. The best part – the rainy season – is right around the corner! That first rain will make you want to go out and dance in it! Some years I actually did! And the smell of that first rain – unforgettable!
We are in a dry spell here, too, but not for 8 months like there. Don’t worry, the refreshing will be there soon!

wow, it’s hard to see that it is so dry down there with those beautiful pictures of flowers. you must have to keep them watered. it is in the 90’s today and could get to 100 tomorrow. Not looking forward to it. I have to keep watering the vegetable garden in the early morning because the day heats up quickly lately. luv, gin
